What is the Oxford Policy Hackathon?

A collaborative event where participants use computational methods, from data analysis and machine learning to simulation and visualisation, to address real-world policy challenges over an intensive weekend.

Where does it take place?

The hackathon takes place in Oxford, at the University of Oxford's Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR).

Who can participate?

The hackathon is open to students, researchers, and professionals with an interest in policy and data. Teams benefit from diverse skills: coding, statistics, domain expertise, and communication.

Do I need a technical background?

No single background is required. We welcome participants with policy expertise, social science training, or technical skills. Successful teams combine different perspectives.

How are teams formed?

Participants can apply individually or in small groups. We will help match individuals to teams before the event so that each group has a mix of relevant skills.

What kind of challenges will we work on?

Challenges focus on societally and politically relevant questions where computational methods can add insight, for example analysing public data, modelling policy scenarios, or building tools for evidence-based decision-making.

Is there a cost to participate?

Participation details, including any fees or funding support, will be announced when applications open. Check back soon or contact the organisers for the latest information.
